Coming Soon: #WCWs

The only thing I know fa sho is that I know nothing! The other only thing I know fa sho is that I am lucky to have the coolest, smartest, kindest, bravest, and most talented friends on the planet. Combine these truths and what do you get? A new feature series on this blog!

2018-08-10 18:20:13.159.JPG

Starting in October, on Wednesdays, I will be featuring women who inspire me and I'm so excited to get started. Y'all are in for a dang treat!

As Humans, we are always growing, always learning, and while I do have some stuff figured out, there is SO MUCH I have yet to learn. I can't wait for us to get to hear from others and share in the different life lessons they've been presented with.

I want to feature the women I know from every walk of life so that collectively we can support and learn from each other. Hearing other people's stories is such an important part of understanding, vulnerability is such a key ingredient to connection, pizza is knowledge*, and badass babes are everything. It's gonna be a blast.

*Ten points if you understood the pizza reference.

*Ten points if you understood the pizza reference.

So make sure to be on the lookout in October for the Queen Parade and let me know if you or someone you know should be featured! Hit me up on Instagram or Facebook

Sunny Days

Summertiiiiime and the LA weather is easy...except for when you want to hide your body and you can't because it's 100 degrees outside.

ACS_0749.jpg

I’ve loved being cold my whole life because I could throw on big sweaters and pants and hide. When it's hot you can't do that. You're forced to show ya body.

The heat was a huge plus for LA after four Chicago winters (I.was.DONE!), but it also made me nervous. What would happen if I had a bad day and wanted to hide in a huge coat? I couldn’t. I could enjoy my damn life, though! I could stop letting insecurities hold me back. So the latter options are what I went with and look at me now. Backless sundress is out to play in all its glory baby!

I love my body all the time, but that doesn't mean that every single insecurity disappears forever. We're human! We're going to have doubts and fears. It's how we handle ourselves in the face of those fears that determines our character! Do we let fear stop us from getting or doing something that could make us really happy? Or do we say, "I'm scared but f*ck it! I want this and I will deal with the scary feelings when they come up. I will assess what the fear is stemming from, tell myself it'll be ok, and wait for it to pass. I'm not going to run from something I want". Let's keep picking the latter options! Hellyeah!

ACS_0744.JPG
ACS_0745.JPG
ACS_0753.JPG

I want to challenge you to not let insecurities keep you from something you want! From something as small as wearing a dress you want to wear to something as big as asking that cute person you like out, or moving, or whatever! If we believe in ourselves and have the courage to go for it we can do anything. I'm a broken record on this because I firmly believe it.

As Summer winds to a close, I hope you aren't letting yourself hide in thick baggy clothes all the time if you don't want to. I hope you're wearing beautiful backless sundresses and not letting the fear of showing your body keep you from joy. You don't owe anyone a slim summer body. Live your fashion truth and expose whatever you wanna. :)

How does Summer make you feel? Do you dread showing so much of your body or are you embracing it? Let me know on Instagram or Facebook!

Not apologizing for the basic song choice it was the vibe!!! Just let yourself feel joy please :)

My Skincare Routine

Hi! It's time to talk about skincare! I have super dry skin so my routine will not be for everyone, but if you have desert skin as well: welcome. Settle in. Let me tell you a tale of hydration, nourishment, and taking time to take care of ourselves.

I have a four-step routine that I do in the morning before putting on makeup. It keeps my foundation looking more like skin and it's nice to take some time out for myself! As Jonathan of Queer Eye tells us: "it's not selfish it's self-care and there's a difference".

Taking the time (and money) out to have a skincare routine is not practical for everyone, but no matter the time or budget constraints you may be faced with, it's still worth finding products that work for you!

Five points if you spot me ;)

Five points if you spot me ;)

cleanser.facial.moisturizer.spray

I'm going to describe the steps in order going clockwise from the top left!

 1. A delightfully delicate cleanser from Lancer. I used to use makeup remover wipes to clean my face but it was wasteful and using good ol' soap and water twice a day makes me feel like I'm in a commercial. A tiny spot of this stuff cleans my whole face. I feel fresh without my skin dying out which is monumental!

 2. Next step is to clear away the dead skin! I don't use these facials every day, more like once or twice a week. The two-step process from Dr. Dennis Gross smooths and clears the skin to keep it fresh and healthy.

 3. Moisturizer! The main event! Just like the cleanser a tiny bit of this Lancer moisturizer really does the damn thing. I'm left feelin' super moisturized without feeling greasy.

 4. Lastly, I set and refresh with The Organic Pharmacy Rose Facial Spray. It's made with real-ass-roses and it smells. so. good! I'll spray this before and after foundation and also later in the day if my makeup feels a little stale and needs a hydrating boost.

ACS_0818.JPG

Taking the time out of your day to spend a little while pampering yourself, even if it's just two minutes, will remind you of how important it is to take care of your needs! It reminds me every day that I care about myself and I am worthy of care. It helps me manifest that in other parts of my life as well. 10/10 would recommend :)

What's your skincare routine? Tell me on Facebook or Instagram!

Stop Commenting On Other People's Bodies

The title says all you need to know, but you know imma still explain it because ya girl is long-winded. ;)

IMG_1599.JPG

Unless you are a doctor (and probably even then tbh), another human body is none of your business. It's really simple! Your opinions on if someone is too fat or too thin do not matter. Someone "losing too much weight" is a big ol' bag of Noneya (none of ya business). Someone gaining too much weight is a big ol' bag of Noneya as well. It's really really simple.

My body is mine! It doesn't affect you in any way! And let's get super real, a person who goes out of their way to comment doesn't give an eff about health. They just want to assert their perceived moral authority or project their own insecurities onto another person! I don't have time. I'm too busy enjoying myself.

As I talk to my female friends of all sizes about this issue I come to realize that people feel a real ownership over female bodies. One thin friend in particular was losing weight because of a time of heightened anxiety. Her coworker felt as though it was their right to comment and tell my friend that they no longer found her as hot because she was now too thin. I see stories all the time in the reverse too of everyone suddenly becoming a cardiologist the second a fat person steps onto a bus.

A woman's body is not her worth, it is not her morality, and fundamentally it is not. your. business. Women do not owe you a certain body. Any human regardless of gender expression does not owe your eyes a certain look that you prefer. If you have a friend or someone else in your life who you know is working hard to change something about their body and you know for a fact that they would like it if you said something then go ahead! But. If that very specifically is not the case: keep your mouth shut. It's really simple.

I believe in being proud of whatever body you have. I also believe that we are not defined by our bodies. If someone has an opinion on how you look that’s their problem dudes.

Being a human is hard enough, let's make our lives about kindness and try to spread some light. What's your experience with unsolicited comments on your body? I'd love to hear on Facebook or Instagram.

Why Fat Girls Deserve Better Than "Insatiable"

meyoung.jpg

I. Was. Un. Happy! For so much of my life! I hated everything about myself. Look at this little girl. She is miserable.

I would frequently be told things like: β€œYou’re going to lose a bunch of weight one day and be so beautiful.” β€œDon’t you want a boyfriend? No one is ever going to want you when you’re this size.” I was called fat over and over and over in elementary and middle school. Every cool actress and model was super thin. Fat people were ridiculed and tormented for their size. Everywhere I looked everything around me drilled into my head that I was worthless fat. I needed to lose weight and then my life would begin. No one would love me or like me until I changed who I was.

So many fat people have these experiences and they start having them from a very young age. Yes, everyone has insecurities, but not everyone deals with the unrelenting torture that fat people face. Every experience I had reinforced that I was different and that I was wrong.

My uniforms were long and the sleeves were big, while all the other thin girls were in short little dresses and their sleeves were small and cute. It reinforced that I would always be "other". Girls would laugh and make fun of my knee pads at volleyball practices because they were tight around my legs and they thought it was funny that my thighs were so big. My body would be fair game for strange men to discuss on the bus when I was a freshman in High School. "Would you fuck her? I like them big like her but you like them thin, huh? Hahaha yeah, I knew you wouldn't want her. She's too fat for you. You like hot girls."

People cringe when they have to sit next to me on the bus or on a plane. People who barely know me have constantly wanted to discuss my health because they are "concerned". Boys throughout my life have been embarrassed that I had a crush on them, because what does it say about them that the fat girl likes them? Boys in High School and College who were attracted to me wanted to keep our dating a secret. I wouldn't impress their friends and I would make it seem like they couldn't get anyone better. I would try on clothes and weep in the dressing room when nothing even barely fit. I was relegated to playing old Aunts, men, or ugly mean people in plays because that's what fat girls were allowed to be.

There are so many other little examples of how every single day of our lives fat people are told over and over and over again that we are pieces of shit. Worthless. Fat people in our society are demonized. No one is ever actually concerned about my health, no one is ever actually saying any of these things for my benefit, they just hate me. They hate having to look at my body.

What would have helped me combat this hate when I was young? Even just one positive fat role model. An actress who was big and who everyone thought was cool. Who played roles that were hot and confident and fun, and who could be that in real life in interviews too. Growing up there was no one who looked like me who I could relate to in a positive way. Fat characters either have to cry about wanting to lose weight or be a punchline.

If I had seen the representation of one happy fat girl in my life who was portrayed as desirable it would have made a huge difference. It would have changed my life.

A new show for Netflix called β€œInsatiable” is making headlines because it reinforces a dangerous cliche for young fat people.

A girl is fat and unhappy in school. She is made fun of and bullied for her weight. Then she loses a bunch of weight over a summer and everyone now calls her β€œhot”. She exacts revenge on the people who made her life miserable. The actress who plays the formerly fat character wore a fat suit for those scenes....the lists of what’s harmful about this show just keeps going on and on.

This show exactly reinforces every negative media portrayal of fat people and shows exactly what the harmful stereotypes in media are. Like, it’s so bad it’s a wonder how it ever got made in 2018 in the first place. It sounds like a bad 80's movie.

Except for it's not actually a surprise. It's actually very common still in our culture. The ugly duckling gets revenge once she becomes conventionally attractive. But we shouldn't keep telling girls, and especially fat girls, that they need to change everything about themselves to be accepted. It's a lie sold to us for profit and I'm making it my mission to fight it.

I want to be an actress so that when a parent says to a fat young woman, "no one will ever love you when you're fat," she can look to me and the roles I play and be able to say back, "you're wrong".

She will have better representation to look to for support than a thin actress in a fat suit for one episode. She will know she has worth and value now, not 40 pounds from now.

Little fat girls need actresses and characters that they can look up to. Let's do better and give them that.

Tour My Home!

Hi! This is a post I am so so excited to share.

I have always been a huge fan of Home Tours, especially ones from The Everygirl, and now it's my time to share my own!

I have been living in this space for two years now, and while it is not finished and it is not as perfect as I would like for it to be, I am moving! So I'm sharing my space with you to commemorate what was my beautiful little apartment. RIP.

I have lived in a studio in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. My biggest goals in this space were to have it be bright and colorful, to have it be pleasing and cozy, to have it look cohesive, to keep it not toooooo cluttered, and to keep everything organized.

That exposed brick tho.

That exposed brick tho.

Let's start with the living room! I got these couches for my first apartment when I was in college. They serve as a great neutral base for whatever color-scheme I decide to go for. My tip is to keep your couch neutral so that you can change the vibe around it depending on your mood with quick switches of throw pillows or gallery art or any other accessories! If you keep the big/ most expensive things neutral you can keep them for a long time. The throw pillows are no longer sold but these Kate Spade beauties have a similar vibe to the Zebras; here's something similar to the black and pillow.

ACS_0061.JPG
ACS_0082.JPG

I started with a neutral base of white, black, and gold with pops of green for this room, but the older I got the more color I wanted. So pink, a little brown, and silver were added to freshen everything up. If you're just starting out with home decorating I would suggest the neutral base with a pop of color, but I also think there are no rules and your house gets to look like whatever you want it to. So do ya own thing b.

Another favorite part of this space is my gallery wall. I chose to keep everything in a black frame to make it feel cohesive, but I love when I've seen gallery walls with tons of different textures and colors too. It just depends on the vibe of your room! One other fav part of this wall is how flowers always look so good on top of my record player/in front of that flapper girl art print...I die for that lil moment it makes me feel like a true adult.

Shoutout to Queer Eye on Netflix and to Carmex! I am addicted to both.

Shoutout to Queer Eye on Netflix and to Carmex! I am addicted to both.

In a small space, I had to get creative with organization. My TV stand is also my dresser, the green poof next to is filled with miscellaneous things, I keep a basket of blankets in between the couches, and shelving organizers are key in keeping everything looking neat. My biggest tip for organization is that everything needs a container/home to be put back inside of at the end of the day. The basket for blankets keeps those organized, my craft basket is a great place to throw those supplies, my papers or office supplies are all kept in their own containers as well. The systems are all set up so that now I don't have to think about them.

Kitchen time!

ACS_0078.JPG

It's tiny and there's not a lot of counter space but it's modern and nice! If you haven't guessed by now, flowers are very important to me! As soon as I saw these towels at Anthropologie I knew I needed the whole set. I have the pot holder and the apron to match.

In the back corner, I have a mini little bar area, a little plant and a fruit bowl that I love, a little sponge holder that my Momma got me when we went to Paris. In the other corner is a succulent, my teapot, some sugar containers, a cake stand, and currently some flowers but that's only because I ran out of surfaces to put them on.

My favorite part of my kitchen are all my Broadway Magnets! Whenever I go to a show I buy a magnet and it's a nice little reminder of those happy memories! We love Broadway!

Shoutout to my pals, my favorite Degas, and St. Dionysius.

Shoutout to my pals, my favorite Degas, and St. Dionysius.

Now it's time for the bedroom. While I truly love this little house, something it truly lacks is storage so I had to get creative. I travel a lot and I have quite a few pieces of luggage, plus some other misc. items, so the only solution my Momma and I could come up with was to get bed risers. My bed is high so that I can keep everything under there. It's a little too college but I feel like a princess with my bed this tall tbh. My headboard is something else that I've had forever, and the bedding is old too.

Shoutout to my lil flamingo friend! :)

Shoutout to my lil flamingo friend! :)

The deer was a Christmas present from a best friend many years ago as well. (Sorry nothing in here is current but I found lookalikes!)

One tip I do want to give though is that nothing on my bed matches too perfectly. I love that the white of the duvet is different from the cream of the pillows and it's a little different from the headboard. Not being too matchy-matchy makes it feel like a real person lives here instead of this being a showroom.

Rebellions are built on hope.

My bathroom is a cute little closet! There are no windows but it's ok because I have a bathtub and a ton of counter space. This room is a little matchy-matchy because I couldn't resist. (I'm learning through writing this that even if my bed might not be, I am still definitely a very matchy-matchy girl. My Mom is so happy rn.) I love having all of my makeup displayed, I love my flower shower curtain hooks, I love my "peachy-keen Jellybean" cross stitch, I love it all!

That's all! I love my little space and I hope you loved lookin' at it! My last piece of advice is that you're the Room BossTM and your space gets to look exactly how you want it to! As long as it makes you feel good that's all that matters. Forget trends and rules and create a space that makes you happy to be in it!

My little house is my favorite place to be and I'm sure I'm going to miss it very much when I move to LA at the end of this month. So many sweet sweet mems! Moments with friends, dates, laughs, lonely nights, parties, kisses. My little yoga studio, movie theater, spa, disco, refuge and so much more. I am lucky I got to live here. Now onto the next!

Tell me your design thoughts below! What would you add or change? I want to know!

FACE MASKS! (An Introduction)

It's time to talk about my truest love: Face Masks. The millennial treat. Pop a mask on and take 15-20 minutes to yourself to relax and pretend that you're fancy. Face masks are my favorite form of self-care for many reasons and the skin benefits with the right mask aren't too shabby either. Let's chat about 'em!

My favorite face mask, you ask? Thank you for asking! My favorite face masks are from Kocostar. I will be doing a full post about my all-time favorite masks from many different brands in the future, but for now, let's talk slices and petals!

I've linked a few of my favorite flavors ;)

I've linked a few of my favorite flavors ;)

lemon.rose.tulip.sunflower.cucumber

Here are the reasons to love these masks: 1) The mask is not one large sheet that doesn't totally fit your face but instead is made up of small sheets that you can place around your face/body and focus in specific areas. 2) They legit look like flower petals!!!!!! Or slices of fruits!!! It's a true treat and it feels like you're in a fancy and romantic spa. It's fun when a mask is pretty enough to selfie in. 3) They make my skin feel amazing. The formulas are great and I really feel like they do what they say they're going to do!

Taking time out of your week to do a little something nice for yourself is important! And if you need more of an excuse to do one, it's scientifically proven that putting wet things on a face calms us down. It's called "Mammalian Diving Response" and it's why we love swimming and showering and bathing and those flotation pod things! It's necessary for your mental health as a human being tbh.

Lemme know if you'd like to read about more mask recommendations from me, and tag me in your petal mask selfies if you try them! I'd love to see!

A Happy Place

On a pretty LA day a couple weeks ago I stepped out to a fun little pop-up-event-museum-thing with my Momma and sweet pal. We expected to get some cute pics out of the day, but what we got instead was a legit really fun and awesome experience. If you're in LA (or soon Chicago will be getting a location!) you should definitely check out Happy Place! It was a delight.

Our experience taking pictures in all the different rooms reminded me of a couple things. The first thing was about my outfit. These weird palazzo overalls may be my most favorite clothing item. They are so weird. I love them so much.

A teacher I had a year ago at Second City told me once that he admired my style. I was wearing these same parachute dreams with a white t-shirt underneath so you could see that they were a stringy kind of overall. β€œYou always wear whatever you want to wear and you don't care what others will think. I wish I had your confidence. You dress the way I wish I could.” I’m still not entirely sure it was a compliment, but I take it as one!

My style has always been a little bit different from everyone else's and I've always loved clothes. Even when I was feeling self-conscious about my body, or even when a shopping trip ended in tears because nothing fit, I have always loved expressing myself through fashion.

With a love of fashion, comes fashion magazines. With fashion magazines, comes fashion rules for fat girls. These rules are all I’ve ever heard and I’m just not about that life. Everybody gets a certain set of β€œrules” to make their body look β€œbetter”. Fat girls get rules, thin girls get rules, short girls get rules... it’s exhausting!

I much prefer to wear whatever I want to wear! A fashion magazine would probably tell me to burn these pants, but eff that! If someone doesn’t like my outfit they don’t have to wear it and they don’t have to look at me. I'll wear horizontal stripes, I'll wear something tight, I'll wear something weird! If something makes you feel confident and happy that’s literally the only thing that matters.

Life is short and tbh if you can’t wear overall palazzo pants like you’re in a Clown remake of Three’s Company doing a crossover episode with Little House on the Prairie then what’s the point? Wear the damn thing. Love your damn self.

ACS_0407.JPG

The second thing I was reminded of was what a nightmare Happy Place would have been before I learned to not be ashamed of my body and to actually love it. I probably would’ve looked at a picture someone took of me and started weeping because I thought I looked too fat and then let that ruin our whole day. But we had so much fun! And we all looked so cute!

Pictures of my belly or chins before would have sent me into a self-hating fit, but if a picture like the one posted directly below is cool but shows an insecurity (like my double chin) then who cares?! The picture itself makes me really happy so why try to hide something that I perceive to be an imperfection? There's no reason! I think I look cool and powerful. If someone has a problem with that picture that's just their problem, not mine.

So here I will post some more pics that I wouldn't have posted before now in the hopes that they inspire you. Maybe now you will feel empowered to post a pic that you love, but that might make you feel a little self-conscious. Remember that everyone can see your body in real life so there’s no need to hide a picture that you love!

ACS_0406.JPG
I am BeyoncΓ© always.

I am BeyoncΓ© always.

IMG_5342 2.JPG

Being afraid of what we look like or what people will think holds us back from loving ourselves, living life to the fullest, all those clichΓ© things. It's all clichΓ© because it's true. If something makes you feel happy, wear it. If a picture makes you happy, post it. You're the boss and you get to make decisions for your life that make you feel good without having to worry about what other people will think. My two clichΓ© cents for the day. ;)

Is there something that you want to wear, but someone told you not to because of your body type? Do you not post pictures sometimes because you’re afraid what people will think? I wanna know what β€œfashion rules” you were taught and if you still follow them or not. Tell me all about it all on Facebook!

Four Of The Most Instagrammable Spots In San Francisco

When in a new city it can be hard to know the best places to sightsee! It also can be difficult to find where to get that perfect tourist gram! Enter me! Your fav Insta-obsessed bb is here to help you see the best sights and take the best pics. Here are four (of the many, many, many) beautiful places I love in San Francisco. Enjoy and gram the crap out of them!

1. Haight Street

IMG_4217.jpg

First up is Haight Street! Full of history, this street is the prefect tourist destination in general. The center of the Summer of Love moment, home of the Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream Shop, and home to the most amazing taxidermy store I've ever experienced. The Haight is also full of beautiful murals and buildings to gram. These fnnch lips are my favs, but if you spend a day along Haight street walking from park to park you'll find everything you're looking for and then some!

2. Palace of Fine Arts

ACS_0356.JPG

The Palace of Fine Arts was originally built in 1915 for the World's Fair, but it was so pretty they decided it would be a crime to remove it after the fair was done. Thank Goodness! It is one of the prettiest places in San Francisco for sure. Any given day you can find prom parties, wedding parties, engaged couples, and Insta baddies taking pictures here. Don't let it's popularity detour you! You want these dreamy pics in your life and on your feed.

3. Mural Alley in the Mission

ACS_0417.jpg

The Clarion Alley Mural Project was established in 1992 by local artists as a way to amplify the artistic voices of marginalized groups by giving them space to produce aesthetically diverse public art. This alley, and several others around the Mission, are filled with beautiful and moving pieces by a broad range of artists. Come for the pics, but stay for the beautiful art.

4. China Beach

ACS_0372.JPG

Sadly China Beach is not the Princess Diaries beach, but not sadly you can't beat the view and privacy this beach provides! You can see the dang Golden Gate Bridge! Hike down to this beach with a packed lunch, your camera, and someone you love to have a truly delightful afternoon.

If you try any of these grams be sure to tag me! I want to see! I hope you enjoy seeing these sights and taking these pics, but of course, in the end, I think we all learned that the only Instagrams that matter are the ones you post inside your heart. ;)
